Cycling safety review

Project Overview

Client
City of Winnipeg
Year
2016

There has been extensive research that addresses the benefits associated with cycling, including improved health, reduced traffic congestion and vehicle emissions, and increased quality of life. Cyclist risk is mostly attributed to the risk of injury, with injuries primarily arising from falling off or being thrown from a bicycle and collisions with motorists. MORR Transportation Consulting Ltd. conducted a study on the current practice and available knowledge regarding mandatory safety devices for cyclists, including helmets, lighting, and sound devices, through a literature and legislation review and a survey of Canadian municipalities to assist the City of Winnipeg in policy implementation.
